The title combines two Latin words: mutuus “mutual” and mutus “mute”. This is a concertante piece with the percussionist playing a “mute” part, which depends on the soloist’s physical expressions “reciprocating” the musical gestures of the ensemble members. The piece is to be performed in (almost) complete darkness in which the ensemble is hidden. Only the soundless soloist is shown in the ray of light. His movements represent the rhythms and the textures of the other performers. The audience hears the ensemble but sees the percussionist playing in the air.

Commissioned by the Polish Composers’ Union (ZKP) for its 70th anniversary for orkest de ereprijs.

Tytuł utworu łączy w sobie dwa słowa: mutuus „wzajemny" oraz mutus „niemy". Kompozycja ta jest formą koncertującą, w której perkusista wykonuje „niemą" partię. Jej istotą jest ekspresja ruchowa solisty, który „odwzajemniać" ma muzyczne gesty wykonywane przez muzyków z zespołu. Kompozycja powinna być wykonana w (prawie) całkowitej ciemnoście, w której skryty jest zespół. Jedynie bezdźwięczny solista jest ukazany w wiązce światła. Jego ruchy przedstawiają rytmy i faktury pozostałych wykonawców. Publiczność słyszy zespół, ale widzi perkusistę grającego w powietrzu.

Zamówione przez Związek Kompozytorów Polskich z okazji 70. rocznicy jego powstania dla orkest de ereprijs.
