Phonos ek Mechanes is a Greek phrase which means the sound from the machine. That is the main idea of the band established in Wrocław (Poland) in 2007 by composers and electroacoustic musicians: Cezary Duchnowski, Paweł Hendrich and Sławomir Kupczak.The trio creates music with laptops controlled mostly by typical instruments such as piano, electric guitar or violin. These instruments can use microtonal tuning and preparation. By computers every parameter of a sound (pitch, velocity, duration, timbre) is transformed into a row of digits which are then turned into a new quality of sound. 

Phonos ek Mechanes plays human electronics. It is a mixture of human gesture, specific character of playing an instrument and algorithms written in Max.

A contemplative show presenting musical visions inspired by the oldest work of Polish music – the song Bogurodzica [Mother of God]. This religious piece has inspired contemplative sounds firmly rooted in modern forms of electronic music and video. Audiovisual technology becomes here a time machine for taking the audience on an artistic journey – across the history of Polish music. The project was premiered in the former Cistercian Monastery of St. Hedwig of Silesia in Trzebnica. Walking through the Baroque interiors of the monastery, which today is looked after by the Sisters of Mercy of St. Charles Borromeo, the spectators were introduced into an ascetic atmosphere of silence.

The name of the project by Cezary Duchnowski, Paweł Hendrich and Marcin Rupociński refers in its title to Mi-parti, and in its musical content to a nonexistent electroacoustic composition by Witold Lutosławski, which the composer intended to create.

The meaning of the new title (Mi-repris = 'half-taken over' and metaphorically: 'half-recovered') should be understood in two ways: in connection with the two-part form of the project and in reference to the realization of a non-existent, although intended piece by Witold Lutosławski, the idea of which was 'taken over' and 'recovered'. 

In the first part of the piece, Cezary Duchnowski, Paweł Hendrich, and Marcin Rupociński transform preserved sketches into music, in accordance with the spirit, aesthetics, and technological capabilities of the era in which the concept was created. The result will be acousmatic music. The second part will be an impression of the composers, who based their ideas both on Lutosławski's sketches and on his idiomatic musical language.

The resulting new form of expression brings the sketches of an unfinished electroacoustic work into the present day and draws on solutions unavailable to Lutosławski. In this way, the creators of the project 'enliven' Witold Lutosławski's concept with their own aesthetic and, above all, technological achievements. They bring in the idea of 'human electronics', which consists in controlling the parameters of electronic music with musical instruments using their own computer software.

The piece was created thanks to the "Composer's Orders" programme, carried out by the Institute of Music and Dance. Its world premiere will take place as part of a series of concerts at the Nowy Teatr theater, entitled "The New Music Stage," which is organized by the Lutosławski Society.

Concert inspired by newly developed software for controlling computer games by means of musical instruments.

A unique combination of improvised music and computer gaming featuring the following games: Pong, Mustetris, Rip-Switch, Tree Story and Slender.
